Hey there teachers and parents! Spring is just around the corner, bringing a burst of new energy and opportunities for learning. Spring can be the perfect time to infuse our classrooms with engaging activities that celebrate the season and inspire curiosity in our young learners.
Let’s explore 14 March and spring activities that your kids will absolutely love!
1. Planting Seeds
What kid doesn’t love getting their hands dirty? Okay, maybe a few, but that’s what gardening gloves are for! Dig into learning about plant life cycles by allowing your kids to plant their own seeds, learning how to care for them, and experiencing the magic of watching them grow!
You can also teach about the parts of a plant and their roles in helping plants grow and thrive! Try using an engaging visual like this one:
2. Butterfly Life Cycle Study
Seeing a graceful butterfly swirling through the air is a sure sign that spring is on the way! Kids can’t help but admire their beauty and love learning more! Dive into the fascinating world of butterflies by studying their life cycle from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.
Gift your students the joy of experiencing one of the most exciting metamorphoses on our planet!
3. Celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day
Ah, St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday celebrating Irish culture, full of lucky shamrocks, gold coins, colorful rainbows, and of course tons of green! Although we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, we can incorporate all kinds of activities throughout the month to learn more about Irish culture and history!
Try incorporating special foods, Irish music, dancing, creative crafts, and fun hands-on activities in your classroom! Here are a few of my favorite St. Patrick’s Day printables that can be used any time throughout the month:
4. Bird Watching
Ever catch yourself glancing out the window at a beautiful chirping bird? There’s something so restorative about reconnecting with nature, even for a brief moment.
One way to gift this to your students is by setting up a bird feeder outside your classroom window. As a class, you can record the different bird species that visit throughout the day. This can be used as a writing or science center where your students learn how to identify different species using their colors, patterns, and calls. Support this learning by using a book or chart about identifying specific birds in your area.
5. Celebrate Women’s History
March is Women’s History Month, although let’s be real, we should be celebrating women all year round… Right? Right. Let’s take some extra time this month to spotlight a few of the amazing achievements of women and how they have changed our world for the better. Here are a few printable resources to use as learning tools or extension activities:
6. Life Cycle of Frogs
Ribbit-ribbit! I remember being so fascinated with frogs as a child. One of the few wild animals that would let you get up close and maybe even hold it (if you were lucky). In a world of growing screen time, share a little piece of nature with your students!
Learn about the life cycle of frogs through hands-on activities like observing tadpoles in a classroom aquarium or using hands-on props and cards, like these ones!
7. Springtime Storytelling
Read-a-louds are always a great way to introduce new concepts and seasons! I don’t know about you, but they were some of my fondest memories in school. Use a cozy corner in your classroom to read and discuss spring-themed children’s books. If you’re looking to add a few to your collection, here are some that are great to introduce in the month of March!
8. Outdoor Learning
Ahh, sweet freedom! Take learning outside whenever possible, whether it’s conducting hands-on science experiments, reading stories, or playing nature games. Enjoy the fresh air, the warm sunshine, and the soft breeze while allowing your kiddos to explore and learn more about the world around them. These are cherished moments they will remember for a lifetime!
9. Spring Printables
Spring is packed full of colorful flowers and sunshine, but on those inevitable rainy days, sprinkle some fun printables into the mix! Here are a bunch of kid favorites like, playing bingo games, using task cards, coloring, and more!
10. Spring Digital Activities
Along with time spent outdoors, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning, integrating technology can also play an important role in education. Digital task cards offer an interactive learning experience that appeals to diverse learning styles. They can provide immediate feedback, differentiated instruction, accessibility, flexibility, and an eco-conscious approach to learning! Use digital task cards to target specific skills that need reinforcement, or enrich learning for students that need more of a challenge!
11. Insect Investigations
Sorry to bug you… but here is another idea: Study the world of insects by observing them in their natural habitat or by setting up an ant farm in the classroom. Books are undeniably great and serve an important role in education, but they can’t quite replace the excitement of real-life experiences. And spring is the perfect time to sprinkle in some of these moments when you can!
Your students will be absolutely fascinated by watching ants work together, digging sand tunnels, and building bridges… think of all the future little engineers of the world! You can also incorporate some bug-themed extension worksheets that keep the learning going!
12. Springtime Music and Movement
The winter blues has a way of sneaking up on us sometimes… Shake it off with lively music and movement activities that celebrate the arrival of spring! Turn on some upbeat tunes, get outside if possible, and get out those wiggles!
Try adding some colorful ribbons like these to enhance the fun!
13. Community Garden Project
Collaborate with your school or local community to start a garden project, where students can learn about gardening, teamwork, and sustainability. Caring for another living thing can teach your kids about empathy and can help them develop a better understanding of the world around them.
14. Springtime Animal Adaptations
Learning how to adapt to our ever-changing environment can be one of the most important skills we ever learn. Animals can be great examples of this! Learn how they adapt to changing seasons by studying their behaviors and habitats in the springtime.
Observe animals in the classroom, such as camouflaging moths or lizards. Or bring some laughter into your lesson with this book all about gross animal adaptations!
I hope these March activities gave you a few ideas to incorporate into your classroom this spring! Let’s continue growing a love of learning and exploration that will last a lifetime.
