What Is the Iditarod? 🤷🏽♀️
The Iditarod is an annual sled dog race that covers nearly 1,000 miles of Alaska’s toughest terrain.
Mushers (dog sled drivers) and their amazing teams of huskies race from Anchorage to Nome, battling icy conditions, high winds, and freezing temperatures. ❄️
It’s often called “The Last Great Race on Earth” because of its incredible challenges and rich history.
This real-world event is the perfect way to capture your students’ attention while reinforcing key learning standards.
Fun and Easy Iditarod Activities for Your Classroom 🙌🏽
Start by introducing your students to the history, challenges, and excitement of the Iditarod.
Use an informational guide to break down key facts and vocabulary words like “musher,” “checkpoint,” and “sled dog team.”
This builds background knowledge and prepares students for deeper learning.

🐾 Design a Race Logo 🎨
Have students design a logo for the Iditarod, just like real sporting events have! 🖌️
They can use symbols, colors, and images that represent the race, Alaska, or sled dog teams.
This can also be used as a persuasive writing activity if students write an explanation of their design choices!
🐾 Virtual Field Trip to Alaska 🏔️
Take your students on a virtual field trip using online videos, interactive maps, or live webcams of Alaska’s landscapes and wildlife. 💻
You can explore real checkpoints along the Iditarod trail, watch interviews with mushers, or even learn about Arctic animals.

🐾 Dog Sled Weight Challenge (Math & Science) ⚖️
Mushers carefully pack their sleds with supplies for the race.
Have students create a mock sled packing list and determine the total weight of the items.
Then, challenge them with real-world math problems:
- “If a sled can hold 300 pounds, how many food bags (each weighing 20 lbs) can it carry?” 🛷
- “A musher starts with 500 lbs of supplies. If they drop off 50 lbs at each checkpoint, how much will they have left at checkpoint #6?”
🐾 Persuasive Writing: Should Sled Dogs Be Used for Racing? ✏️
Challenge students to write a persuasive essay on whether or not sled dogs should race in extreme conditions.
They can research both sides of the argument and support their opinion with facts.
This is a great way to practice opinion writing, research, and critical thinking.
🐾 Create a Race-Day Weather Report 🌨️
Mushers have to deal with harsh Arctic weather during the Iditarod. ❄️
Have students pretend to be meteorologists and create a weather report for a specific day of the race. They can include:
- Temperature
- Wind speed
- Snowfall predictions
- How this weather might affect the racers
🐾 Letter to a Musher 💌
Many Iditarod mushers accept letters from students!
Have your class write friendly letters to a real musher, asking about their experience, their dogs, and the challenges of the race. ✏️
This activity ties in letter writing, real-world communication, and social studies!
🐾 STEM Challenge: Build a Mini Sled 🛷
Provide materials like popsicle sticks, straws, string, and tape.
Challenge students to build their own mini sleds.
You can even test them by pulling small objects across different surfaces to see which designs work best!
🐾 Map the Iditarod Trail 🗺️
Print out or display a map of Alaska and have students track the Iditarod route as they follow the race in real time.
They can mark checkpoints, research their locations, and even make predictions about which musher might win! 🥇

Have students calculate distances between checkpoints, estimate total race time, or compare past race results.
This is a great way to integrate math into your Iditarod unit!
🐾Writing Crafts: Make Learning Hands-On 📝
Let your students get creative while reinforcing writing skills with Iditarod-themed writing crafts!
- Name their own sled dog team and explain their choices
- Write a journal entry from the perspective of a musher or sled dog.
